Self learners usually go check out tutorials they are interested, and so often forgot the basic.

As an educator who taught herself to draw, I understand we want to draw things we like, for kick start this is good and essential as we keep doing that out of interest, enthusiasm however when you want to do better, then we need to go back to basic.

 

I didn't understand why they put blue, purple, green colour on the skin, until I draw this.

A Youtuber, (I believe she is a Russian) said pay attention to the undertone of the skin, it also reflects surrounding colours, this picture is a good example of undertones. Alice (Natalie Portman) wearing this pink wig at a nightclub, full of vibrant colours.

In Russia, people in art school spend 4 years learn how to draw, I guess that's why many of them are so good. From the very basic drawing like spheres, rectangles, sculptures to fruits, plants, then animals and the finally portrait. The understanding of basic is to make sure we start from a right proportion and colour tone, practice make me change the way of how I see things, objects, people, background, foreground, turning my eyes to a shape converter, scale, colour picker.

Most importantly, the essence of human being, the soul, an expression, a deeper feeling more than skin deep.
